Screening (TRUS Biopsy)

A trans rectal ultrasound (TRUS) is when a probe and needle are inserted into the rectum and it is used to take 6-12 samples of prostate tissue. These tissue samples are sent to a pathologist to determine whether prostate cancer is present. A TRUS Biopsy is performed as a screening for prostate cancer and is a short outpatient procedure.

Surgery (Radical Prostatectomy)

A radical retropubic prostatectomy is the most frequently performed prostate surgery and is the complete removal of the prostate. The prostate is reached from an incision in the abdomen and behind the pubic bone. The prostate is removed and the urethra is then attached to the bladder. A pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) may also be done with a radical retropubic prostatectomy. A PLND is the removal of the lymph nodes attached to the prostate due to the risk of the spread of cancer.
